Flood Warning For Clackmannanshire

Sepa have just issued the following flood warning for Clackmannanshire

A FLOOD WATCH has been issued for Fife and Clackmannanshire rivers.

The River Devon is rising rapidly due to heavy rainfall and Glen Devon Reservoir is spilling over. The Sterling Mill at Tillicoultry area and surrounding properties might be at risk of flooding.

This FLOOD WATCH is now in force until further notice

UPDATE

The Marchglen Road between the A908 and Tillicoultry and the C110 Shavelhaugh Road, are closed due to flooding.

The B914 Glenochil to Collylands Road is flooded and traffic is being regulated with signals.

The A908 Moss Road, Tillicoultry, is flooded but is currently passable with care. The Collylands to Alva Road, the B908, and the Menstrie to Tullibody Road, C101, are also all passable with care at the moment

The £20million PFI facility will support 49,000 locals

Nominations Sought for Clackmannanshire's Citizen of the Year 2009

Over the coming weeks Clackmannanshire Council is asking people to nominate someone who has given their time and energy on a voluntary basis to benefit the local community. Nominees don't have to be well-known or involved in high-profile events, as long as their efforts benefit local people. Previous nominees are also eligible to be nominated again.

A selection of local successful Duke of Edinburgh achievers in bronze, silver and gold awards will be acknowledged as part of the Clackmannanshire Awards ceremony.

To nominate an individual or group for outstanding service to the community complete a form and return it to Provost Derek Stewart at Greenfield. You can also email nominations to the Provost at dstewart@clacks.gov.uk or visit www.clacksweb.org.uk and complete an online nomination form.

The closing date for nominations is 18th January 2010

The recipient of this prestigious title will be named at an awards ceremony held in Alva Academy on 25th February 2010.

Clackmannanshire Council's first photography competition, has attracted more than 650 entries with the shortlist down to ten images. Its now your turn to vote for a winner!

A prize of £100 will be given to the photographer who's image receives the most votes. The shortlist includes images of the Forth, Gartmorn Dam, the Ochils and Tullibody Bridge.

Robots used to clean water works in Clackmannanshire

Alloa Man wins compensation after horrific accident

An Alloa man who suffered injuries at his work has been awarded an undisclosed six-figure sum from his employers O-I.

Liam McLaughlin was on a routine shift, when molten glass spilled from the production line - on attempting to clear the jam, Mr McLaughlin`s fireproof overalls caught fire inflicting bad burns to his leg.

New Event Space for top of High Street, Alloa

The Imagine Alloa project team met with the Scottish Disability Equality Forum (SDEF) this week to ensure plans for the town centre's regeneration will suit everyone.

One of the main aspects of the town's redevelopment is the new events space at the top of the High Street which will be levelled and finished in top quality granite to offer a safe, level surface.

Other improvements will include lowered kerbs and shop doorway entrances and LED lights being fitted to street signs rather than fluorescent lights which can cause difficulty for people with epilepsy.

Alloa Posties to get sonic Alarms

Within the last three months, 3 posties in the Alloa area have been attacked by dogs while delivering the mail.

With an increase in attacks on posties, Royal Mail have asked owners to keep their dogs under control.

Sonic alarms are available to posties to help back off barking or threatening dogs.

Operation Alamo a success

Central Scotland Police have hailed Operation Alamo, the campaign to combat antisocial behaviour offences surrounding the use of fireworks and bonfires, a success.

Several arrests were made throughout the Forth Valley for irresponsible and dangerous use of firewoks, but on the whole calls made to the emergency services were down on last year.

Meggan Dawson-Farrell excels at Jedburgh!

Alloa Academy pupil Meggan Dawson-Farrell has been selected by the Scottish Government's Sports Division to be a face of Disability Sport in the Active Nations Campaign.

The campaign is part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Programme and Meggan's selection confirms her position as a rising sports star.

Her most recent sporting achievement was competing in her first ever 10k in a new made-to-measure racing chair at The Scottish Wheelchair Championships in Jedburgh.

Meggan was the 1st Scot over the line in a respectable time of 40 minutes and 57 seconds, 8 minutes behind Britain's most successful ever wheelchair athlete, Tanni Grey-Thompson.

In May she was invited to be a member of the Scottish Disability Sport National Athletics Development Squad. She also trains with Red Star Athletics Club in Glasgow and has been sponsored by Clackmannanshire firm O-I which has allowed her to buy a new made-to-measure racing chair.

She also won the Great Scottish Run Junior Wheelchair race in Glasgow in September.

A fire is currently ablaze at a factory in Alva Industrial Estate. The main road between Stirling and St Andrews (A91) has been closed. Pupils at Alva academy have been kept indoors as a safety precaution.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Police appeal for car driver to come forward

Police are appealing for a car driver who stopped to help a woman as she walked home during the early hours of Saturday morning to come forward.

The man, who was driving a blue mid-sized car, stopped to help the distressed woman as she walked along Tullibody Road in Alloa sometime between 3.30am-4am.

Police believe the 47-year-old woman had been assaulted in a town centre flat and a 40-year-old man has been reported in connection with the incident.

Forth Valley Business Diversity Awards

Employers from across Forth Valley met at the Tollbooth in Stirling on 8th October for the 2009 Forth Valley Business Diversity Awards.

There were four categories - Recruitment, Retention, Social Firm and Overall Winner. The awards were made by the Scottish Society for Autism’s Art Workshop.

The Overall Winner was Stirling Management Centre, Stirling.The winner of the Recruitment category was ASDA Stenhousemuir.

The winner of the Retention category was Capita Life & Pensions Service, Stirling. The Winner of the Social Firm was Candies Cuisine, Alloa.

Victoria Wines in Alloa High Street to close.

The off-licence group First Quench who own Threshers and the brand Victoria Wine have announced that they wil be closing down a total of 53 stores out of 219 in Scotland including the Victoria Wines Store in Alloa High Street.

First Quench went into administration last month, after struggling against the recession.

Scotland’s OPAS Service To help People Over 60

A new welfare rights advice service for people over 60 backed by £700,000 from the Scottish Government, could help up to 22,000 people.

The Older People’s Advice Service (OPAS) will target over 60s in the most deprived parts of Clackmannanshire, West Lothian and North Lanarkshire.

The project aims to address poverty and financial exclusion by improving take-up of older people’s benefits with particular emphasis on clients who have health problems, are housebound, or who live in remote areas.

Advice is delivered face-to-face in the person’s own home, engaging with those people that do not access the internet or want to discuss these issues on the telephone.

Linkwide will deliver the service.

Exhibition on Wind Turbines at Forthbank

Clackmannanshire Council and Partnerships for Renewables are holding an exhibition to discuss the ongoing renewable energy investigation work at the Forthbank site in Alloa.

Anyone interested in the project, can come along and discuss the ongoing work with the project team.

The site could host up to four commercial scale wind turbines.

The development process is expected to take another year to complete and suggestions are welcomed on how to keep the community involved in the development process throughout 2010.

Supervillage at Forestmill gets go ahead

The largest ever development to receive planning permission in Clackmannanshire Council's history has been passed by the planning committee

The £330m development by Hermiston Securities, of the Muir Group, includes more than 1,000 new homes, a school, shops, a hotel and golf course.

The plans, which have been 10 years in the making, could create almost 1,000 jobs in the area.

Work will now begin on the development, which is due for completion in 2025.

The decision by planners at Clackmannanshire Council follows the backing of Scottish ministers in June.

Planning committee convenor Alastair Campbell said the development was a major boost for Clackmannanshire.

The development will raise the area's population to 57,000.

Central Scotland Safety Camera Partnership has launched a new programme aimed at new and young drivers. A CD will be available which will help drivers become more aware of hazards that present themselves on the roads and in so doing so reduce road accidents.

The Interactive Highway Code CD ROMS are available on loan at Clackmannanshire libraries.

According to a new study by The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIDM), commisssioned by the Scottish Government, the most deprived part of Scotland has been identified as Parkhead West and Barrowfield in the east end of Glasgow,

The study looked at more than 6,000 neighbourhoods across Scotland.

Areas such as Clackmannanshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire have shown improvements in levels of multiple deprivation.
